Unfortunately, printer history is a bit of a mystery. All we know for sure is that the first known printing press was invented in China in the ninth century by Bi Sheng. Soon enough, other countries and cultures developed their own printing presses based on Bi Sheng's work and have created many variations since then. As early as 1808, Thomas Jefferson noted that it was difficult to conceive of an invention which more benefited mankind than the printing press."

The invention of printers dates back to ancient times but who exactly invented it is not entirely clear. The written word is one of the most important communication tools in history and without printing, it would have been a lot more difficult to share information. Hieroglyphics, which are ancient Egyptian language signs and symbols, were the first form of written communication. These hieroglyphics were carved on clay tablets and rocks up until 700 BC.
They soon became very popular among neighboring cultures, who began to copy them. They developed their own variations for writing with symbols, which came to be known as cuneiforms or wedge shaped carvings. However, there wasn't any real system for writing so it was very difficult to read and understand what was written by other cultures or civilizations. This created an even greater need for a universal system of writing that everyone would be able to understand.

The first printing press was invented in China around 1045 AD by Bi Sheng. It was made up of wood and used ceramic movable type characters, which made the whole process much easier and faster. However, it was very fragile and couldn't be moved very far. While this invention was a step forward in printing, there were still many flaws that had to be worked out before it could become a widely accepted system of mass communication.
Inventing the Printing Press
The first known printing press was invented by the German Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden in 1436. It is called the "The Gutenberg Press" after its creator and it marked a major improvement over Bi Sheng's model. Gutenberg's invention was based on the screw press and he used ink as well as movable type to create a functional printing system that could be mass produced. However, there were a few problems with this model as well. For one thing, it was extremely heavy so it had to be anchored into the ground to keep from being knocked over during use. It also needed several people to work it which meant that one person couldn't operate it on his own.
Invention of the Typewriter
The first typewriter was created by a man named Christopher Latham in 1714. It used a system of levers and cogs to control the keys and print them on paper. However, it had several flaws which made it difficult for people to use on a daily basis. The paper had to be attached manually, which was quite time consuming and frustrating. The inventor's plan for mass producing his invention were never realized but he did manage to draw up his designs in writing, so those who followed after him could try to improve upon them.
